14 Top Tips for Cosmetic Labels
What should be included on cosmetics labels?
Makeup labels and personal care labels, skincare labels, health and beauty labels, whether products are sold or given away, should contain information that accurately represents the contents. Based on our experience as producers of customised labels, we have put together a list of some of the most important elements to include on personal care labels.
14 Points to Consider for Health and Beauty Labels
1. Free from info
As consumers are becoming more aware of ingredients and their effects, there is a growing demand for products that do not contain certain ingredients such as parabens, sulphates or alcohol. Highlighting ‘free from’ information on the label helps to more selectively target your audience and increase sales within a specific marketplace.
2. Endorsements
Has your product won an award or been featured somewhere? Credentials like awards labels and medals can immediately elevate the perceived value of a product.
3. Animal testing info
The rabbit symbol, for example, communicates compassion for animals in the formulation and production of health and beauty products, and personal care. However, you may wish to elaborate more on animal testing if this is one of your product USPs.
4. Safety info
Include any relevant safety information and particularly if warning consumers of potential harmful effects. Indicate that a deliciously fruity smelling shower gel should not be ingested or where precautions should be taken for use on sensitive areas such as eyes.
5. Weight of product
While the weight or volume may not always be a legal requirement, it helps consumers make purchases by comparing the value of products. Containers can be deceiving as biggest does not always mean more actual product.
6. Means of identification
Having a barcode or QR code on your labels is useful for point of sale and stock control.
7. Contact details
This can be in the form of an active website, telephone number or email address.
8. List of ingredients
Check the requirements of how ingredients should be listed according to the country in which the product will be sold. Most countries require the ingredients to be listed in order of proportion of the whole product.
9. Shelf life and storage instructions
How long will your product be good for in optimal conditions? Always include recommendations for storage, if your product needs to be stored below a certain temperature, for example, or away from light and direct heat.
10. Batch number
In the event that a product needs to be traced or recalled it is necessary to include the batch number on the label.
11. How, where or when made
Labels must not be misleading as to how when and where a product is made, so ensure this information is accurately stated on the label.
12. Recycling info
How does the vessel and its label get recycled? Sometimes different recycling streams need to be considered and including suggestions for recycling on the label can be especially useful.
13. Sourcing correct and up to date information for cosmetics labels
This list is by no means exhaustive, and legislation can change quickly. Always check if your label meets the legal requirements by doing independent research. The Government website is a good starting place:
