In this Q&A, we sit down with Cornwall Air Ambulance to discuss the incredible impact of their work, the challenges they face, and how public support, including initiatives like our Christmas Hamper fundraiser, makes a real difference. We spoke to Jen Morgan, who is the Fundraising Officer for Cornwall Air Ambulance, and here are her words…

 

1. Can you tell us a bit about Cornwall Air Ambulance’s mission and the impact it has on the local community?

Cornwall Air Ambulance provides pre-hospital emergency care to those who are critically ill or injured across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The crew are tasked to over 1,000 missions every year, helping to save lives across the county.

2.  What types of emergencies does the air ambulance typically respond to, and how critical is its role in saving lives in Cornwall?

The charity responds to a mixture of trauma and medical-related incidents, with cardiac arrests accounting for around a third of missions each year. The highly trained Critical Care Paramedics carry specialist equipment that isn’t found on road ambulances, enabling them to carry out potentially lifesaving interventions.

3.  What challenges does Cornwall Air Ambulance face in maintaining its operations, and how does public fundraising help meet those needs?

Cornwall Air Ambulance is a charity, it receives no direct government funding and relies on the generosity of the people of Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and beyond to help keep your helicopter flying. It costs over £7million each year to keep the charity running, and they could not continue to operate without fundraising and donations.

4.  How can supporters make a real difference through donations, and what are some specific ways these contributions help the service run effectively?

Cornwall Air Ambulance would not be able to carry out its lifesaving work without its supporters. Every penny in the pot, every bake sale, bingo night, event or challenge all helps to keep the service running, meaning the crew can attend those in their greatest moment of need.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who chooses to fundraise for us, every pound raised makes a lifesaving difference. We love to hear about all the creative ways people raise money, and initiatives like this help keep us responding to those critically ill or injured across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

6. What’s one thing you wish more people knew about Cornwall Air Ambulance, and how can they get involved beyond donations?

As a charity, Cornwall Air Ambulances relies solely on donations to keep your helicopter flying. Without your support, the crew would not be able to carry out their lifesaving work. There are numerous ways that you can support the charity, from donating to holding fundraising events, to becoming a volunteer and helping raise awareness by sharing our social media content.
